Really unusual and rare brooch made in England c1870 to 1880. It is set in a fine 15-carat yellow gold and set in the centre with what is known as an Essex crystal. The Essex crystal is a cabochon-cut piece of crystal which is carved at the back to reveal the figure of, in this case, a beautiful dog. The dog is wonderfully hand painted and he has the cutest a blue bow to the front. What is nice and touching about this piece is that when turned over at the back it holds a photograph of the original owner of the brooch, and most likely as well, of the dog depicted.
