Highly unusual pendant and chain, made in the late 19th century and set in silver.
It depicts a beautifully executed Buddha. What is really unusual about this piece is that it has a secret little compartment in the base that you can click open, and inside are the original 5 dice.
Astragalomancy, or cubomancy, or astragyromancy, is a form of cleromancy: a divination practice that uses dice specially marked with letters or numbers, and is often associated with Buddhism. Therefore this is not originally a gambler’s charm.
It could have become an unusual party piece maybe for someone who wanted to go out gambling and keep their dices with them, or someone with higher spiritual pursuits.
