Victorian Reverse Intaglio Essex Crystal Bird Brooch.
Really unusual original antique pendant and chain was made in England c1880 to 1900.
It is set in a fine eighteen-carat yellow gold and comes with an original eighteen-carat yellow gold chain.

Essex crystal carved and painted showing a bird (a robin or a finch) upon a cherry tree branch. Set on a mother of pearl background in eighteen-carat gold.
Essex Crystal or reverse intaglio are made from a cabochon (domed) crystal which has been carved from the back and then hand painted. The finished work is then mounted, with mother of pearl at the back, into a gold fitting.
It is a really unusual piece and in beautiful, superb original condition.
