Beautiful original late Victorian period pendant made in England c1880 to 1900 and set in a fine eighteen-carat yellow gold setting.
The pendant itself is what is known as an Essex crystal
Essex crystal carved and painted showing a bird upon a cherry tree branch. Set on a mother of pearl background in eighteen-carat gold.
Essex Crystal or reverse intaglio are made from a cabochon (domed) crystal which has been carved from the back and then hand painted. The finished work is then mounted, with mother of pearl at the back, into a gold fitting.
This one depicts a wonderful goldfinch bird in a forest scene.
