Unusual ring made in the Georgian period in England c1780 to 1800.
It is set in eighteen-carat yellow gold and it is set with a rock crystal which is hand carved and then painted in reverse.

The painting is set on woven hair as a background for grief, probably for a person lost at sea, given the maritime nature of the figure.

It is a mourning ring and it is beautifully decorated on each side in a split shank design.
