Really unusual mid to late Victorian pietra dura pendant and chain. The pendant is set in a very fine eighteen-carat yellow gold setting. It is set in the centre with a beautiful pale cream coloured stone which is inlaid to form bugs. The bugs might be described as a butterfly, maybe in the colour of Italy where the technique originated pietra dura during Grand Tours, a dragonfly, and a fly. The bugs are set with malachite, cornelian, and bloodstone stones: none of this is painted, they are made from individual stones being inlaid to the white background.
